Huawei Pura 90 Ultra: When the internal competition in the mobile phone market is exaggerated and the imaging arms race falls into the vicious circle of “big bottom is justice”, the thickness of mobile phones and the bulge of the lens have become an unspeakable pain for users.
The thickness of the 1-inch main camera module of mainstream flagships generally exceeds 15mm, which is nearly 60% thicker than the 8.4mm body, like carrying a “image Oreo” on the back.
Huawei has torn open this gap with a mechanical aesthetic revolution – from the rotating telescopic lens of the Pura 70 Ultra to the continuous optical zoom macro telephoto of the upcoming Pura 90 Ultra , the form of mobile phone imaging is being redefined.
The point is that for consumers who pursue photo taking but don’t like bulky products, with this combination of parameters, the Pura 80 series to be released next seems not so attractive.

Huawei Pura 90 Ultra
It should be understood that Huawei’s solution to the problem began with precise mechanical reconstruction. On the Pura 70 Ultra, the ” star module ” main camera automatically extends 1mm when the camera is started through a rotating guide system, making room for the 1-inch large bottom and F1.6 aperture.
Behind this one millimeter of displacement is the precise collaboration of 255 processes: the gear installation accuracy reaches 0.005mm (equivalent to 1/20 of the diameter of a hair), the spring tolerance is controlled at 0.01mm, and even the variable aperture assembly accuracy reaches 0.015mm.
What is even more amazing is its reliability design. The 12 piano steel guide posts and 8 springs embedded in the module form a buffer system. Combined with the gravity sensor and AI algorithm, the lens can be retracted within 0.5 seconds at the moment of falling.
After 300,000 lifting and lowering tests and 2-meter deep water immersion verification, the mechanical structure is no longer synonymous with fragility. Therefore, when the lens rises with a specially tuned mechanical sound, the user not only gains the space bonus, but also has a sense of ritual like extending and retracting a SLR lens.

According to the information, the new phone will be equipped with a periscope macro telephoto lens with continuous optical zoom. The weakness of traditional mobile phone telephoto lenses is the “jump-gear zoom” – relying on algorithm cropping from 3x to 10x, and the image quality drops drastically.
However, the patent applied for by Huawei in 2022 revealed a more radical solution: manually controlling the lifting and lowering mirror group through the side sliding button to achieve 3-8x physical continuous optical zoom.
The core lies in the secondary refraction optical path design: the light enters the movable lens group after being refracted by the prism, and lossless zoom is achieved by changing the distance between the lens and the sensor.
This technology directly targets the pain points of the industry. In addition, Huawei has integrated a 1/1.3-inch large bottom (the same specification as the Pura 80 Ultra) into the optical variable architecture, which increases the amount of light entering the telephoto lens by more than 300%. The effect will naturally be very good.

The fusion of key telephoto and macro is another leap in the imaging philosophy of the Pura series. For example, the periscope telephoto of the Pura 70 Ultra supports a minimum focusing distance of 5cm, which can capture the veins of petals as small as a fingernail.
The secret lies in the long-stroke sliding-axis focusing technology: the lens group slides on a micro-guide rail, just like adjusting the focal length of a microscope, so that the same lens can not only take clear pictures of buildings a hundred meters away, but also focus on the scales on the wings of a butterfly at your fingertips.
On the Pura 90 Ultra, this capability will be further enhanced. Combined with the continuous zoom structure, users can expect to seamlessly switch focus distances in the 3x to 8x zoom range, achieving full-scene coverage of “from distant mountains to ant limbs.”
More importantly, the ultra-large aperture and RYYB filter array greatly increase the amount of light entering the macro camera. Even when shooting the compound eyes of insects in dark environments, the image can present a combination of creamy blur and razor-sharp sharpness.

Of course, these are just preliminary revelations at the moment. Apart from some information about the images, there is not much information about other aspects. I think that at this stage we can still focus on the Pura 80 series, because the new phone has been officially announced and there is a lot of leaked information.
Because unlike the Mate series which is geared towards business people, the Huawei Pura series focuses more on improving imaging capabilities, so the improved camera capabilities of this new phone have attracted special attention from users.
For example, Huawei’s Pura 80 series will use a large number of domestic CMOS, one of which is model SC5A0CS, which has 50 million pixels, a sensor size of 1 inch, and uses RYYB technology. It is expected to become the main camera sensor of Huawei Pura 80 Ultra.

There are even reports that another model in the Pura 80 series is the SC590XS, which also has 50 million pixels, a sensor size of 1/1.3 inches, and uses RYYB technology. It is expected to be used to create a periscope telephoto lens.
In addition, it is expected to support a dual-focal-length periscope with a single lens. The module has high optical sensitivity. It is speculated that it is a multi-fold optical structure + multi-component synchronization + parent-child actuation, which controls different optical paths through movable parts and enables different optical focal lengths.
Coupled with the new generation of Red Maple imaging technology, XMAGE imaging technology, the upgraded version of Kirin 9020 processor , and the support of the native Hongmeng system. Judging from these aspects alone, the new phone has a very strong performance, but if users have no desire to change their phones, they can wait patiently for the arrival of new phones in the future.
